Art – Art projects often mirror what students are studying in their core classes. For example first graders 'travel' to far away lands to create fireworks and zodiacs from China and learn of painted elephants of India. The second grade students learn of Native Americans from South Carolina and the crafts that they create. The third grade students study the ancient culture of Greece and work hard on creating Grecian urns from recycled plastic bottles.
The fourth and fifth grade students study the more technical aspects of art. They learn about perspective with 1 point and 2 points to create a 3 dimensional effect, and how to draw portraits with accurate proportions.
Creative Movement - Creative Movement meets once a week with students from K-5 through 4th grade. During Creative Movement students discover all the different ways their bodies move. Students also expand their creativity and problem solving skills. Through movement the students develop an appreciation of the wonderful instrument (our bodies) that God created. Students also explore the connections of movement and other disciplines such as music, visual art, and literature.
Speech/Drama – Beginning in 1st grade, students have an opportunity to practice speaking in front of groups of varying sizes as they participate in Reader’s Theater and other venues. All elementary students are involved with dramatic presentations during school-wide events such as the Christmas Program, Living History Museum, and the Spring Arts Program.
Keyboarding - Elementary Keyboarding
utilizes a variety of resources to aid in the development of eye-hand
coordination and fine motor skills in our younger students while
challenging them mentally. Students love the activities, which
incorporate lessons from science, health, writing, reading, social
studies and math! Students are instructed in the proper
names and functions of the various parts of the computer, correct
posture, and hand/finger placement. They are introduced to the
keyboard in a systematic way.
Languages
Sign Language – K5 students are introduced to basic sign language. They enjoy learning thematic vocabulary, songs, and scripture. This new way of expression and communication is embraced by these young students!
Spanish – Young students literally soak up language! Our 1st through 3rd graders continue to expand their communication skills through Spanish instruction that is interactive, hands-on, and fun.
Latin – Instruction in language continues for 4th and 5th graders as they study Latin. Curriculum used in 4th grade is Prima Latina, which introduces the students to the rules of pronunciation, as well as the basic vocabulary. Beginning in 5th grade, students use Latina Christiana to learn more Latin vocabulary and verb tenses. In class, students interactively practice the translation of Latin phrases into English. They also strengthen their vocabulary skills by learning the English derivatives which came from Latin roots.
Music – Elementary music classes are
available for students K5 through 5th grade. Each class has the
opportunity to experience music through singing, listening, and
instrument playing. Not only do the students have a hands-on
experience with music in the classroom to improve musical skill but
they are also given opportunities to learn basic music theory and
music history through fun games, books, and musical tasks.
Traditional musical genre as well as praise/worship and hymns are
used to share the gospel with the children throughout the year.
PE meets once a week with students from 1st-4th grade. During PE students have an opportunity to learn and practice physical skills important to healthy living and sports achievement. Students explore the importance of strength, flexibility, and endurance as well as learn the importance of good sportsmanship skills. PE gives the students an opportunity to add much needed physical activity into their lives. Hopefully, PE also leads them to an appreciation for physical activity that will last through out their lives.
Art (6th – 8th grades and high school electives) - Middle and high school students have an opportunity to expand their exposure to art and to put art theory into practice. Projects in 6th and 7th grades will sometimes support topics of instruction in other classes such as history or language arts. An interesting variety of materials is used during class to broaden student understanding and appreciation of art mediums.
Keyboarding - Middle School exercises are designed to build essential keyboarding skills and typing proficiency. Typing activities provide a variety of challenges and rewards. Lessons use tracking for key progress, WPM speeds and accuracy. Each program has several “games” that reinforce learned keyboarding skills while incorporating other subject areas - allowing the student lots of fun too!
Latin – Students in 6th grade continue to study Latin. This is a great opportunity for students to broaden their vocabulary skills and to lay a solid foundation for learning a Romance language such as Spanish or French.
Music (6th-7th) - This course is designed for students to learn to listen to music in a knowledgeable way and to add to their understanding of basic musical elements such as rhythm and notation. Students are exposed to a variety of musical styles and composers throughout music history. Instruction involves discussion of music history and theory, listening to compositions, singing or playing an instrument, as well as analyzing music and understanding its relationship to history and culture.
Physical Education - Recognizing that our bodies are not our own but are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19), the BRCA physical education program seeks to train children to be good stewards of their bodies. In this, we develop the body through physical activities that are both fun and challenging, the mind through instruction of rules and strategies of each sport, and the spirit by applying God’s Word to attitudes we hold while interacting in each aspect of the PE program and in everyday life. In all, we seek to make effective disciples of Jesus Christ by heeding God’s Word in 1 Thess. 5:23, “May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Spanish - To equip our high school students for the world in which they live, they are offered instruction in Spanish. Coursework includes exposure to Spanish cultures as well as instruction in speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish.
Technology - High school course credit is earned as our students review keyboarding skills and begin to work in Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher, and creating web sites.
