Frequently Asked Questions

Curriculum / Testing (top)

What do you mean by "elements of a classical education"?

BRCA emphasizes the basics such as memorization of math facts, grammar rules, phonics, and spelling in elementary. Reading is novel-based for the most part for 4th and 5th grade. Sixth grade and above incorporate novel studies into literature units (including the classics when age-appropriate) and vocabulary expansion is encouraged. A respect for God and His interactive role with us is taught through both Bible and history/social studies. Developing habits of careful observation, accuracy, and appreciation for the beauty and structure of God’s world are emphasized through hands-on science, art and music. Additionally, Latin and Spanish are offered at age-appropriate levels.

How do you measure BRCA’s academic success?

Teachers continually assess students using a variety of tools, including but not limited to curriculum-based, project-based, or teacher-created assessments. Each spring, students in second through eighth grades are tested using the Stanford Achievement Tests. Older students participate in the ACT EXPLORE and PLAN tests, the PSAT, the ACT, and SAT as applicable. Students taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses participate in the applicable AP Exams.

What curriculum does BRCA use?

A variety of publisher’s materials are incorporated into our instructional program including Christian and secular where deemed an appropriate and "best" fit. Our ultimate goal is to point our students to the Creator of the Universe and His Son, Jesus Christ. In light of this, we seek to nurture within our students a Christian world and life view that will, by God’s grace, enable them to impact the world for Christ. A more detailed outline of the curriculum may be found on our curriculum page.

What are growth plans?

BRCA plans to add a grade each year, with 12th grade added in 2010-11. Additionally, we have plans for a new structure which will include large fine arts areas, a larger library, and seven classrooms. A gymnasium is currently under construction.
